Do We Really Need to Know What an Artist Was Thinking?

Derrick is my husband but I don’t know what he wanted to convey with this image. I know what I see, the story I see in this image. What does the image say to you?

Why does one create art – poetry, fiction, photograpy, music, paintings, sculpures? Is it to evoke an emotional respones, a specific response or idea? Or is it simply an expression of what is within us?
